This project highlights the diverse needs of councils across New Zealand, and the challenges and opportunities faced in controlling invasive species. We aimed to facilitate knowledge sharing both between councils and from councils to the general public, promoting awareness and understanding of unwanted organisms in our environment.
Our challenge was to provide instant, accurate information to users while allowing councils the flexibility to add their own information to the database, such as regional management programmes and control methods.
The result, Pest and Weed Central, is an ever expanding database of invasive species which regional councils can easily integrate into their digital offerings. With the option to either add Pest and Weed Central to their own website or host it on a separate website, Pest and Weed Central is used by councils across the country as an educational resource and reference guide.

If your Council would like to join Pest & Weed Central we would love to hear from you
Consistency is provided by the centrally managed system, but we understood each council faces unique challenges. To meet these diverse needs, Pest and Weed Central allows councils to add locally relevant information such as warnings and management programmes.
Councils can also use their own branding colours, fonts and images throughout the Hub. Customisable PDF printouts and a shared library of images to choose from allow each council to control the display and functionality of its own Pest Hub.
Councils are also empowered to share knowledge, with the ability to upload their own information and images to the database.
